Carlos Luis Marrero Burgos was born on June 15, 1931 in Orocovis, Puerto Rico. His mother’s name was Carmen Burgos and father was Monserrate Marrero. He was lovingly known by his siblings as “Cali”. His children called him Papi or Pa. Carlos met his wife Ramona Cardona Jimenez (deceased 2009) in New York and were married in 1959. He is survived by his four children, Maritza, Oscar, Nydia and Nilsa, six grandchildren, one great grandchild, three sisters and one brother. Dad was a veteran. He served in the Army as a Corporal during the Korean War. One story he would enjoy sharing is how he managed to obtain a “weekend pass” plenty of times. Supposedly this happened if his bunk, clothing and shoes were squeaky clean. His secret: Keeping a pair of brand new shiny shoes just for the inspection. Or the time he would get free beer as long as he continued to dance on the tables for the ladies! Papi retired from General Motors after many years working there. Papi would never turn down a game of dominoes. He would win 99% of the time. He would always call himself, “The Champ” even if he was losing! LOL He always made us laugh with his silliness. Telling us that his hair “hurt” (he was bald too!) or when he was wheeling himself around in the wheelchair and the nurses would ask where he was going and his response with a grin would be, “Puerto Rico!” He enjoyed making animal sounds that would make the other residents look for a cat or a bird. When he hit his 80s, I once asked him for words of wisdom. Although not a religious man, he did believe in God, his response was, “Don’t worry about anything.” which led me to this verse: Phillippians 4:6-7: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. He tried his best not to let us worry about anything. Even at the very end, when we knew he wasn’t well, he would say that he was okay. Dad - You are truly our Champ. Papi – Te queremos mucho. We love you and you will be missed.

We pray the love of God enfolds you during your journey through grief. Next time when we get together, we must play a game of dominos in his honor.
