Obituary for Carmen Mercedes Solero

Carmen Mercedes Cruz was born on August 24,1934 in Fajardo Puerto Rico to Eladio Cruz Perez and Angela Millán. She was the second oldest of 9 children as follows: Aida,Carmen, Juan, Ismael, Leonilda, Antonio, Eladio Jr., Genaro & Evelyn. When she was eighteen, she moved to New York City to live with her paternal aunt, Evarista. There she met, dated & married Angel Enrique Solero on December 26th 1953. They had 4 children as follows: Enrique, David, Edwin & Lizbeth.
Carmen was a loving & dedicated wife, mother & grandmother. She is survived by the following family: her daughter Lizbeth, her son David, her son in law Martin, her 5 granddaughters Rachel,Elizabeth, Gabriella, Sara & Angelina, her 2 great grandsons Patrick & Evan , her brothers Juan & Ismael & her sisters Aida & Evelyn.
Carmen was 84 years old when she passed In Hamilton Park Nursing Home the night of Friday May 10th, 2019 after being there 3 days & after a long Hospital stay of over 3 months. Over the last 4 years she completely recovered from 3 strokes & a fall down a full flight of stairs.
In death as in life, Carmen demonstrated tremendous strength & resilience to the very end. In life, she endured the deaths of 2 of her sons at young ages, Edwin at 19 & Enrique at 42. She was widowed at the age of 77 after 58 years of marriage. Carmen had only completed the 11th grade when she was young. But she went to night school in her mid 40’s, earned her GED in English, when her primary language was Spanish, with some help from her daughter & even completed an EKG technician course in English! Carmen also helped raise her 3 youngest granddaughters, Gabriella, Sara & Angelina.
Carmen’s love, tenacity, strength & resilience will continue to live on in the characters of her children & grandchildren. She will be deeply missed, never forgotten & loved always.
