Obituary for Iris Kelcz

Iris Rubini Kelcz was born in Bologna, Italy on April 16, 1924. She passed away at the Agrace Hospice in Madison Wisconsin on Saturday, January 18, 2020. She was 95 years of age. As a young Bolognese, she fell in love with a Polish Army Officer, Maurice, and were married in Bologna where they had their first child, Frederick. A few years later they moved to New York City to escape an uncertain Europe and began a new American life. She had two more children, Frank and Robert and lived in Ozone Park for 60 years. She worked as a teacher’s aide at P.S.64 and taught reading even though she maintained an Italian accent all her life. She had lunches with her local friends at McDonalds and Aldo’s pizzeria in CityLine and during walks with her sons often ran across former students who greeted her and thanked her for her help and patience. In the last five years, as her health declined, she was moved from Queens to Madison Wisconsin where she resided first in Oakwood Village and finally, for her last few weeks at the Agrace Hospice. Her son Fred and wife Sheryl made her feel at home in Madison while Karen Kelcz had made her feel comfortable in Ozone Park following the passing of her husband Maurice and her third son, Robert. As she got older certain things never changed and she maintained her fundamental character being the curious, opinionated, sweet and suspicious lady she’d been her whole life.

She leaves her sons Frederick(Sheryl) and Frank, and daughter-in-law Karen, along with six grandchildren Amanda(Christian), Nicole(Jeremy), Paul(Michelle), Nicholas, Selina and Michael and three great-grandchildren: Eliana, Max and Robert. She was preceded in Death by her husband Maurice Kelcz, her son Robert Kelcz and Grand-daughter Rachel Kelcz.
