Obituary

Obituary for Sam Sartorio

Sam Joseph Sartorio, born in Manhattan, NY on May 26, 1936, died on May 27th. The son of Sicilian immigrants, Antonio and Sadie, he was named in part to honor the spirit of their new country. A lifelong New Yorker, Sam resided in Ridgewood, Brooklyn, before moving to Howard Beach, Queens to raise his family.

Sam is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jeanne (Rando) Sartorio; brother Dominic Sartorio; three sons – Anthony and wife Joan, Thomas and wife Mary, Jeffrey and wife Jacqueline; grandchildren – Christian Ruiz and wife Stephanie, Matthew Ruiz and wife Chelsey, Joseph Sartorio, Andrew Sartorio, Lia Sartorio, Ellis Sartorio, Thomas Sartorio, Jianna Sartorio; and great granddaughter Luna Ruiz. He was predeceased by sisters Millie Valenti and Fannie Sartorio, and by his daughter Carolyn Sartorio Ruiz.

Sam received a Bachelor’s in Accounting, and an MBA in Tax, from Baruch College of the City University of New York and was a Certified Public Accountant. A partner at the firms Saverin & DiVittorio, Touche Ross, and Rosenberg Neuwirth and Kushner, and more recently a senior consultant at Marks Paneth, he served clients in various capacities over an illustrious 58 year career.

Sam leaves a legacy of devotion to family, friends and community. While setting an example of hard work, dedication, and commitment, he took great pride in his children and grandchildren. Sam was a parishioner at St. Helen’s Catholic Church, leading Wednesday night bingo and coaching the baseball team. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Howard Beach, serving as Treasurer for many years. Sam was a member of the Hempstead Golf and Country Club. He savored the opportunities to travel with Jeanne to Italy and annually to Florida to reconnect with friends and family. Sam enjoyed playing golf, rooting for the Yankees and Giants, swimming, history books and movies. He took great pleasure in the company and conversation with friends and family.

Friends are invited to a blessing outside of St. Helen Church in Howard Beach Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at approximately 10:15AM, while remaining in personal vehicles. Interment will follow at approximately 11:30AM at Saint John’s Cemetery, Middle Village. A memorial service is being planned for a future date.

For those desiring, contributions in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (lls.org).

Lia Sartorio

I’ll love and miss you forever, Poppy. Thank you for being the best grandpa a girl could ask for. I have the best guardian angel up in heaven now, and I can promise you that I’ll continue to kick cancer in the butt in your honor. I learned from the best.

Your “Gorgeous” Granddaughter,

Lia
