Obituary

Obituary for Vicente C. Diaz

On January 13, 1938, lifelong sailor Ramon Orellana Diaz and Ana Guevara welcomed their youngest of three sons, Vicente Colon Diaz, to the family in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Along with Carlos and Ernesto Diaz, Vicente’s other siblings included Olga, Gloria, Belgica, Pedro, Efrain, Rosa, Jorge, Raquel, Jose and Luis. At the age of 16 he met the love of his life, Alicia Carrillo. They married on February 11, 1960, and on November 16, 1961 they welcomed the first of their five children, Fredie Colon. It was then that he made the decision to emigrate to the United States to pursue his dreams of a more prosperous life.

Vicente and Alicia settled in the Bronx with relatives and friends where he quickly became an avid New York Yankees fan. Vicente was a hard worker and he often held several jobs to provide for his wife and five children. As a graduate of community college, he found steady employment as a bookkeeper at Gimbels Department Store and later as a New York City Taxi and Limousine Commision driver, and in his final years as a landlord.

He retired in 1997, devoting himself fully to the care of his beloved Alicia. The next year, Vicente’s love and compassion were again on display as he took on primary care of his nephew, Nelson Munoz who suffered from cerebral palsy until his passing in April 2020. All the while, he would continue to focus his energy and attention on his grandchildren making time to attend recitals, plays, graduations and sporting events. He enjoyed being a part of his children's and their families lives. He was a lover of sports, dancing and most genres of music. He had a hearty sense of humor and seldom missed a family barbeque, party or dinner.

“Pa”, as he was affectionately known, was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and beloved friend and neighbor to many in the Cypress Hills and Guayaquil community. He is survived by his five children, Fredie, Vincent, Alan, Ana and Alice as well as his in-laws, Michelle, Jennie, Jackie and Evans. In addition, he leaves behind six grandchildren, Mitchel, Damian, Elias, Olivia, Mialee and Ava-Simone. Other loved ones who mourn Vicente include his in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends in Ecuador and New York

Vincente Diaz. A legend. You were a humble man full of love, strength and encouragement to us. In life and now death you wouldn't want us to focus on the sadness but rather on living with the joyous memories you help to create. Thank you for the life that you lived and for the hearts you’ve touched. Our hearts are full and overflowing with the love that you’ve given each of us. We will keep your memory alive and always remember the man that we called Pa.
